SWISS will be providing the services on its domestic Zurich-Lugano route in partnership with Austrian Airlines from the 2014/15 winter schedules onwards.
The new arrangement will also see the current capacity on the route increased by 50%.
Sister Lufthansa Group carrier Austrian Airlines is to newly operate SWISS’s Zurich-Lugano services on the latter’s behalf using advanced Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 turboprop aircraft. The new service, which begins on 1 November, will remain at the present four daily frequencies; but the new Dash 8-Q400 equipment will offer 76 seats per flight, some 50% more than the aircraft currently used.
“Being ‘The Airline of Switzerland’, we attach great importance to providing strong air links between the Italian-speaking south of the country and Zurich, and from there on to the world’s other key centres,” says SWISS CEO Harry Hohmeister. “And we’re especially pleased here that, in Austrian Airlines, we have found such a sound and reliable partner to do so from within the Lufthansa Group.”
The flights will be operated by Tyrolean Airways, Austrian Airlines’ fully-owned subsidiary. The present wet-lease agreement under which the services concerned are provided by Darwin Airline (now known as Etihad Regional) expires at the end of October and will not be renewed.
