U.S. - International Air Passenger Traffic up Five Percent

International air traffic to/from the U.S. totaled 44.8 million passengers through March 2014, a five percent increase over the March 2013 year-to-date period.

U.S. citizen travel (19.3 million) was up six percent and comprised 43 percent of all air traffic. However, non-U.S. citizen air travelers (25.5 million) increased by four percent with a decline in market share to 57 percent.

U.S. airlines carried 23.9 million passengers, up four percent, dropping their share to 54 percent. Foreign flags carried 20.8 million passengers, up seven percent from same period 2013.

The following, overseas, Canada and Mexico regions are ‘breakouts’ of international:

las-vegas-slideOverseas air traffic accounted for 32.9 million passengers, 71 percent of all international, and grew by five percent. U.S. citizen travel (14.0 million) was up five percent and comprised 44 percent of overseas air traffic. Non-U.S. citizen air travelers (17.9 million) increased by four percent maintaining their market share at 56 percent.

U.S. airlines carried 16.4 million passengers, up three percent, their share dropping to 51 percent. Foreign flags carried 15.5 million passengers, up six percent from March 2013 YTD.

North American markets accounted for 29 percent of U.S. international air traffic flows.

Canadian air traffic accounted for 6.8 million passengers, 15 percent of all international traffic, and increased by four percent. U.S. citizen travel (1.2 million) increased four percent and comprised only 18 percent of air traffic. Canadian, and other foreign national citizen air travelers transiting through Canada (5.5 million), increased by four percent. Market share remained relatively unchanged at 82 percent.

U.S. flags carried 2.7 million passengers, up one percent from last year, and their share declined to 40 percent. Foreign flags carried 4.0 million passengers, up six percent.

Mexico air traffic accounted for 6.1 million passengers, 14 percent of all international traffic, and was up 11 percent. U.S. citizen travel (4.1 million) increased 14 percent and comprised 66 percent of all air traffic, up 1.6 points. Mexicans, and other foreign national air travelers (2.1 million) transiting through Mexico, increased by six percent, with market share at 34 percent.

U.S. flags carried 4.8 million passengers, up nine percent from last year, and their share dropped to 79 percent. Foreign flags carried 1.3 million passengers, up 17 percent increasing share to 21 percent.
