U.S. - International Air Passenger Traffic up Five Percent in May 2015

U.S. Department of Commerce - National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) announced the U.S. - International Air Passenger Traffic in May 2015 including Top 10 Foreign Airports, Top 10 U.S. Airports, and Top 10 Airlines serving U.S. International Non-Stop Markets.

International non-stop air traffic to/from the U.S. totaled 81.7 million passengers through May 2015, a five percent increase over the May 2014 year-to-date period.

U.S. citizen travel (36.0 million) was up six percent and composed 44 percent of all air traffic. Non-U.S. citizen air travelers (45.7 million) increased by four percent, with market share at 56 percent.

U.S. airlines carried 41.6 million passengers, up one percent, however their share slipped to 51 percent. Foreign flags carried 40.1 million passengers, up nine percent from same period 2014.

The following, overseas, Canada and Mexico regions are ‘breakouts’ of international:

Overseas air traffic accounted for 58.9 million passengers, 72 percent of all international, and grew by four percent.

U.S. citizen travel (26.2 million) was up five percent and composed 45 percent of overseas air traffic. Non-U.S. citizen air travelers (32.7 million) increased by four percent.

U.S. airlines carried 28.9 million passengers, up one percent, their share dropping to 49 percent. Foreign flags carried 30.0 million passengers, up eight percent from May 2014 YTD.

Estimated capacity (319,557 seats) on inbound flights from PRC was up 21.7 percent year-over-year. Overall inbound passenger growth was 18.1 percent passenger growth

North American markets accounted for 28 percent of U.S. international air traffic flows.

Canadian air traffic accounted for 11.8 million passengers, almost 15 percent of all international traffic, and increased by four percent.

U.S. citizen travel (2.7 million) increased 11 percent and composed 22 percent of air traffic. Canadian, and other foreign national citizen air travelers transiting through Canada (9.2 million), increased by two percent. Market share remained edged down to 78 percent.

U.S. flags carried 4.6 million passengers, down four percent from last year, and their share slipped to 39 percent. Foreign flags carried 7.3 million passengers, up 10 percent.

Mexico air traffic accounted for 11.0 million passengers, 14 percent of all international traffic, and was up nine percent.

U.S. citizen travel (7.2 million) increased 10 percent and composed 65 percent of all air traffic. Mexicans, and other foreign national air travelers (3.8 million) transiting through Mexico, increased by eight percent, but market share slipped to 35 percent.

U.S. flags carried 8.2 million passengers, up five percent from last year, but their share slipped to 75 percent. Foreign flags carried 2.8 million passengers, up 26 percent increasing share to 25 percent.
