U.S. International Air Passenger Traffic Up 14.6% in March 2024

In March 2024, U.S. international air traffic passenger enplanements saw a significant increase of 14.6% compared to March 2023, reaching a notable 105.7% of the pre-pandemic levels of March 2019.

Boost in Non-U.S. Citizen Arrivals

March 2024 also marked a substantial rise in non-U.S. citizen air passenger arrivals to the United States from abroad, totaling 5.003 million.

This reflects an increase of 16.8% over March 2023, achieving 96.2% of the volume seen in March 2019.

Overseas Visitor Arrivals Continue to Climb

The trend of rising overseas visitor arrivals continued for the 13th consecutive month, with 2.706 million arrivals in March.

These figures represent 93.8% of the pre-pandemic levels, showing a robust recovery from 86.6% in February 2024.

U.S. Citizens Traveling Abroad

U.S. citizen air passenger departures to foreign countries also grew, totaling 6.427 million in March 2024.

This marked a 13.9% increase from March 2023 and a 19.5% rise above March 2019 volumes.

Total air passenger travel (arrivals and departures) between the United States and other countries was led by Mexico with 4.080 million, Canada with 2.909 million, the United Kingdom with 1.578 million, the Dominican Republic with 1.034 million, and Japan with 880,000. International regional air travel to and from the United States included:

  • Europe, which totaled 5.206 million passengers, up 8.5 percent over March 2023, and down only 1.0 percent compared to March 2019. U.S. citizen departures increased by 10.5 percent compared to March 2019, while European citizen arrivals decreased by 5.2 percent.
  • Asia, which totaled 2.520 million passengers, up 33.2 percent over March 2023, but down 19.0 percent compared to March 2019. Asian citizen arrivals to the U.S. were down 32.6 percent compared to March 2019, but U.S. citizen departures were up 3.9 percent.
  • South/Central America/Caribbean, which totaled 6.137 million, up 17.8 percent over March 2023, and 14.7 percent compared to March 2019.

Top U.S. Ports serving international locations included New York (JFK) with 2.785 million, Miami (MIA) with 2.258 million, Los Angeles (LAX) with 2.001 million, Newark (EWR) with 1.257 million, and San Francisco (SFO) with 1.253 million.

Top Foreign Ports serving U.S. locations were Cancun (CUN) with 1.413 million, London Heathrow (LHR) with 1.409 million, Toronto (YYZ) with 1.181 million, Mexico City (MEX) with 696,000, and Paris (CDG) with 630,000.
