After almost 13 years as the Executive Director of the Las Cruces, New Mexico Convention & Visitors Bureau (LCCVB), Ken Mompellier has announced his retirement.

His last day will May 27, 2011.

In his time at the LCCVB, Mompellier led an effort to build the city's first convention center as well as overseeing a nearly 91% increase in lodger's tax funds.

The 55,000 square foot Las Cruces Convention Center was a priority of Mompellier and the City of Las Cruces since his arrival in 1998. The center opened its doors in December 2010.

Before coming to Las Cruces, Mompellier served as the Director of Tourism for the Sacramento, CA and Salt Lake City, UT CVBs.  In addition, he also worked in hotel sales and in the ski resort industry.

"Much has been accomplished during his tenure," said Las Cruces City Manager Robert Garza.  "He has done a great deal to sell our community."

Mompellier transformed a bureau that was largely reactive when he arrived in 1998, into a proactive organization that works toward expanding the visitor industry in Las Cruces. He created three sales departments, a media department and services department.  He also worked to incorporate the services of an advertising agency to assist with branding Las Cruces.

Mompellier is a past-president of the Tourism Association of New Mexico and is a current member of the Destination Marketing Association International's (DMAI) EmpowerMINT Sales and Marketing committee.

Throughout his career, he has been very involved in supporting the travel industry and has worked closely with organizations such as the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), Meeting Professional International (MPI), National Tour Association (NTA) U.S. Travel Association (USTA), Western Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus (WACVB) along with many others, to champion the importance of travel.
