Turkey Tour Specialist Peter Sommer Travels has been named ‘Tour Operator of the Year’ by Britain’s Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).
Announced at a gala event in London, celebrating AITO’s 40th anniversary, the award is the latest in a string of accolades for the specialist travel company, which offers more than 20 different expert-led land tours and gulet cruises among the ancient sites of the Mediterranean.
Over 150 AITO Tour Operators, AITO Agents, Affiliated Business Partners and Tourist Offices, Social and Honorary members and special guests attended the event and the evening concluded with the award ceremony. Awards were presented by Simon Reeve, the celebrated British author, BBC television presenter and explorer.
The AITO Tour Operator of the Year award goes to the member which has had exceptional independent customer reviews on AITO.com during 2015. The number of reviews need to be 10% or more of the total annual passengers carried to ensure a true reflection of that company's performance.
Peter Sommer Travels, headed by archaeologist and former award-winning BBC documentary maker Peter Sommer, organise land based archaeological tours throughout Turkey as well as gulet cruises along the Turkish coast and walking holidays on the Lycian Way, Hittite Trail and Carian Trail, considered some of the finest and most interesting trekking routes in the world. They also offer specialist family tours, gastronomic tours, Istanbul city tours and private gulet charters.
One of Peter Sommer Travels’ signature tours, In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great, was inspired by Peter’s own 2,000 mile walk across Turkey in 1994 and his subsequent work on a BBC documentary of the same name. Personally led by Peter, the tour was named one of the world’s ten best educational holidays by National Geographic Traveller magazine in 2008.
“To receive the AITO Tour Operator of the Year award based on the criteria of exceptional independent customer reviews is an enormous honour and we’re immensely proud,” Peter Sommer said. “This is a testament not only to the extraordinary experiences that we aim to offer on our cultural tours and the fascinating knowledge and passion offered by our team of expert guides but primarily the appreciation of our guests for what we do. We are extremely grateful for the continuing support of our loyal guests over the years.”
