Enthusiastic locals and international tourists are expected to fill the square from the early evening as they eagerly await what could be an historic moment for Turkey, the surrounding region and the Olympic Movement, if Istanbul is awarded the honour of hosting the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The live link-up with the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires will begin at 22:00 local time, with the decision at 23:00.
Speaking from Buenos Aires, Hasan Arat, Istanbul 2020 Bid Chairman said:
“We may be thousands of miles away from home, but we can feel that the people of Turkey are here with us in in spirit. The live site at Sultanahmet Square will allow them to live every second of this historic moment with us. As our own Olympic marathon campaign approaches the final sprint we hope that the tens of thousands of fans in Sultanahmet Square will be able to cheer us on as we cross the finish line, just as they would cheer Olympic marathon runners from the same spectacular location in seven years’ time.
“The whole of Turkey has dreamt of this moment for so long and 94% of the nation supports our bid. If we are awarded the honour of hosting the Games there will be celebrations across the country for many weeks. We’ll hear the cheers from Sultanahmet Square here in Buenos Aires!”
