  • Published by Ozgur Tore

After running a highly successful and well-attended Market Focus programme at the London Book Fair last year, Turkey's literature and publishing industry will be promoted again at this year's fair held on 8-10 April on stand W305 at Earls Court 2.

The Office of the Counsellor for Culture and Information, in co-operation with the National Organising Committee for Book Fairs, together with around 20 professional associations and Non-Governmental Organisations, will promote Turkish literature and Turkey's publishing industry, while also presenting the TEDA Translation Grant Programme. The stand occupies a space of 117m², showcasing more than 100 publishing houses, and an exhibition of a collection of around 2,000 books. The Istanbul Chamber of Commerce will also be exhibiting and hosting a number of publishers on their stand in a separate section where literary works will be displayed and meetings conducted.

This year, the attendance of five literary agencies is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The participating literary agencies will be supporting Turkish literature and writers’ gain access to the international market by focussing on seeking new international connections for Turkish authors, publishers and translators. This will contribute significantly to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s TEDA* translation and publications grant programme (www.tedaproject.com)

The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s stand will consist of meeting areas, display of promotional materials, books in both Turkish and English together with publications supported by the TEDA programme and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Ali Selcuk Can, Attaché, for The Office of the Counsellor for Culture and Information, says: “Following last year's London Book Fair when around 150 writers, publishers, translators, artists and academics took part in 80 events and activities to celebrate Turkey as the market focus, this year we will continue to highlight the astonishing range of Turkish literature which is available in a number of languages as well as Turkey's burgeoning publishing industry”.

*The TEDA Translation and Grant Programme was launched in 2005, since which 1559 literary works supported by TEDA have been published in 61 countries in 56 different languages.   In the United Kingdom, TEDA has supported the translation of 39 literary works from Turkish to English and the subsequent publishing and distribution of 27 of those works by British publishers.
