The Consulate General of the United States in Istanbul has announced that consular services have been cancelled for December 9 due to a “possible security threat” against the United States. The U.S. Embassy in Ankara, the U.S. Consulate in Adana, and the Consular Agency İzmir will operate as usual.
In a security announcement, the Consulate said, “Public services, including visa appointments and non-emergency American Citizen Services appointments, for Dec. 9, 2015, are canceled and will be rescheduled for a later date.”
Extensive security measures have been taken around the consulate, as the main road leading to the consulate building was closed while police officers were posted to the entrance. Armored vehicles and water cannon were also dispatched to the area.
