Today at the 21st Annual General Assembly, Dr. Yiannis Paraschis, Chief Executive Officer of Athens International Airport was elected Chairman of the Airports Council International World Governing Board by a unanimous vote of the members.
Additionally, Frederick (Rick) Piccolo, President and CEO of the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority was elected Vice-Chair. Both Dr. Paraschis and Mr. Piccolo will begin their two-year leadership terms in January of 2012.
Dr. Paraschis is a former chair of ACI Europe and Mr. Piccolo is a former chair of ACI North America and both have indicated a willingness to meet the obligations of leadership at the global level.
“We welcome the opportunity to work with Yiannis and Rick over the next two years and thank them for their commitment to serve our members,” said ACI World Director General Angela Gittens.
Dr. Paraschis expressed his appreciation following the vote. “I would like to thank the General Assembly and my colleagues from the World Board for the trust that they have placed in me. During the economic crisis and the international instability we are experiencing, it is critical for the voice of the airports to be unified at a global level.” Dr. Paraschis continued, “Building on the work of my predecessor Mr. Max Moore-Wilton and with the historic move of ACI World to Montreal close to ICAO, I am confident that with our new team and the leadership of Angela Gittens we will deliver results for our members. We will further develop a stronger and balanced relationship with IATA while at the same time meeting and exceeding our members’ expectations on safety, security, sustainability with an emphasis on the areas of economics and environment.”
Commenting on his election, new Vice-Chair Rick Piccolo said, “I am pleased and humbled by the members support and look forward to working with Yiannis and the Board in addressing the numerous global aviation issues in these challenging times.”Mr. Max Moore-Wilton from Sydney International Airport will conclude his two-year term in January and will become Immediate Past Chair of the association.
