Poppies of Peace

  • Published by Sevil Oren
Gallipoli is alive with poppies every spring. 95 years have passed since all those young men were lost in eternity.

Sorrow and suffering has gained a new dimension during those years. Sadness has created a new form of understanding by expressing feelings through art, painting and music.

It would not be unfair to call the poppies at Gallipoli "The Blood Flowers" as they are so expressive of what lies beneath them. The touch is delicate but the stem is strong, so were the heroes that we lost. They were so young, innocent, yet strong. The impossible conditions did not make them loose their feelings, the respect, comradeship and sharing a common destiny brought them together. Gallipoli was a unique war that created a new nation and saved an old one. Anzacs respected Turks and Turks respected the Anzacs. They could have competed in sports, art, music, painting, and sailing had they been given another choice. They had no choice, they were betrayed by politics. They enlisted for a touristic visit rather than soldiers for a war. They would have been so welcome by the hospitable Turks, had this been the case. All fought because they had to and were told to.

However, they come alive each and every year on the fields of Gallipoli, we can see them, feel their contribution to our lives for and hopefully to eternal peace.

In 2006 The Gallipoli Memorial Club launched the Gallipoli Art Prize in Australia and the Canakkale Art Prize in Turkey. Through Canakkale Art Prize the feelings of friendship and peace between the nations and the mutual recognition of the shared history is kept alive each year.

This year also a "Symphonic Poetry" a "Requiem" has been composed for the 95th commemoration. We can feel, see and hear the Voice of the heroes resting in peace at Gallipoli.
No other words can summarise a nations feelings better than Mustafa Kemal Ataturk words;

"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives...You are now lying in a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where, they lie side by side here in this country of ours...

You, the mothers, who sent their sons, from far away countries, wipe away your tears, your sons are now lying in our boom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our Sons as well"
