German rail strike widens

railway2mountainsThe German train drivers' union GDL has widened its strike to include passenger services. German rail operator Deutsche Bahn said GDL began the part of its strike affecting passenger trains at 2 a.m. local time (0000 UTC) Wednesday.

Deutsche Bahn said, “From 2 am, Wednesday 20.05.2015 there will be nationwide strikes in Germany. Long-distance, regional and local traffic will run on a restricted timetable. We advise passengers to check for updates before travelling by calling our hotline: 0049 1806 99 66 33 (charges apply) or by entering your journey details here

There was no immediate information about pending negotiations, but a Bahn representative said discussions had been held in Frankfurt about possible arbitration. The talks were due to be "continued shortly," a spokeswoman said.

The union had already halted operations for freight trains Tuesday at 3 p.m. local time.
