Lufthansa Group supports sports film “GOLD”

  • Published by Vedat

Documentary about the lives of three top disabled athletes premiered on 26 February in a Lufthansa Technik hangar.

“GOLD - You can do more than you think” is a moving documentary about the lives of three exceptional individuals who are also Paralympic athletes. The film was premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on 15 February, and will go on general release in Germany on 28 February.

As part of its corporate social responsibility efforts, which focus mainly on promoting the arts and culture, the Lufthansa Group supported the production of the film and helped with the transport of the film crew. The documentary accompanies the Australian wheelchair racer Kurt Fearnley, the blind Kenyan runner Henry Wanyoike and the German world-class swimmer Kirsten Bruhn, who is paralysed from the waist down, on their journey to the 2012 Paralympics in London and throughout their stay there. The three athletes demonstrate impressively what people are capable of achieving if they have the willpower and determination, regardless of any disability. Director and Grimme Award winner Michael Hammon reveals the fascination, strength and zest for life that these athletes exude but also their struggle against despair and social prejudice.

Of key importance for the Lufthansa Group was the strong signal the film sends through its central message: “You can do more than you think”. This applies not only to disabled sportsmen and women but also to each and every one of us. Lufthansa's support for the film ties in well with the company's existing partnerships with the German Olympic Sports Confed¬¬eration and the German Disabled Sports Association.

The film will be premiered on 26 February in a Lufthansa Technik hangar in Hamburg in the presence of the patrons of the project - Federal Minister of the Interior Dr. Hans-Peter Friedrich and UN Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace Willi Lemke - and the First Mayor of the City of Hamburg Olaf Scholz. Some 1,300 guests, including about 100 wheelchair users, have also been invited to the event.
