Tour De France Stars to Take Centre Stage in London this weekend

  • Published by Vedat
The biggest one-day classic race to be held in Britain for over 20 years comes to London this weekend as the centrepiece of a two-day summer festival of cycling.

Starting at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and finishing on The Mall in the shadow of Buckingham Palace on Sunday 4th August, the 140-mile race will pass through eleven London boroughs and the picturesque Surrey hills.

With British fast-man Mark Cavendish on Tour of Denmark duty, the man to watch will be Slovakian sprinting sensation Peter Sagan, who beat Cavendish by 97 points to take his second successive Tour de France green jersey less than a fortnight ago. The 150-strong field will also include two former Milan-San Remo winners in Gerald Ciolek and Matt Goss, two former Tour of Britain winners in Michael Albasini and Romain Feillu, British stars David Millar and Ben Swift, the youngest rider in last month's Tour de France, 19-year-old Danny van Poppel, and the first African rider to wear the Tour's fabled yellow jersey, Daryl Impey.

The Surrey Classic is the headline event of the Prudential RideLondon cycling festival taking place over the first weekend of August. Other events include the RideLondon FreeCycle, a free family event held on an eight-mile traffic-free route past some of London's best sights on Saturday 3rd August; the RideLondon Grand Prix - a series of short criterium-style races for professional women cyclists, youth cyclists and hand-cyclists on a flat 1.3-mile loop in and around St James's Park from 5pm on Saturday; and the RideLondon-Surrey 100, a 100-mile 'sportive' for amateurs which covers the same route as the Surrey Classic, save for the three-loop extension over Leith Hill, earlier on the Sunday.

Besides the Surrey Classic, Surrey 100, FreeCycle and Grand Prix events, there is also a free three-day Prudential RideLondon Cycling Show at the ExCeL exhibition centre running from 1st to 3rd August, where riders in the FreeCycle event can pick up their free goodie bag.

Whether it's reliving the Olympic dream by watching a star-studded field riding in and around the capital and its surrounding countryside, soaking up the atmosphere during the central London circuit races, or taking place in a family-friendly event or a more competitive amateur challenge, RideLondon has something for all two-wheeled fans. In the words of London's Mayor Boris Johnston: "Young or old, cycle mad or as rusty as your old bike, this is the cycling event for everyone."
