Visa free travel for short-term Malaysian travelers is expected to boost travel between the two countries.
Japan-bound travellers from Malaysia and Thailand are currently issued multiple-entry visas enabling holders to enter Japan as often as they want during the validity period.
In 2012, a total of 8.37 million foreigners travelled to Japan, with Thailand and Malaysia accounting for 390,000 of them.
The exact date for the start of visa free travel isn’t announced yet.
According to Japanese media, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government approved last week the exemption of visas for short-term tourists from Malaysia and Thailand. The country is also set to allow multiple-entry visas for visitors from the Philippines and Vietnam in a bid to spur the nation's tourism industry.
