One of the countries benefiting from the volumes of the Chinese tourists is France. According to a new forecast report from Timetric, the number of inbound trips to France from China increased from 778,000 in 2008 to 1.1 million in 2012. In July 2012 the French tourism agency launched a wine and culture campaign with the special purpose to attract Chinese tourist to the country. According to Timetric, this campaign, together with similar initiatives, can prove beneficial for the tourism industry in France as the country still suffers from economic instability.
According to François Navarro, spokesperson for the Ile-de-France regional tourist authority, the competition of the Chinese tourists is fierce. "Let's be perfectly clear, this is a competition with London, this is a battle between cities. Our goal is that Chinese visitors come to Paris, stay for longer and spend more money." Navarro’s statement highlights how important the Asian tourist markets have become to eurozone nations.
Between 2008−2012 the French inbound tourist expenditure spending increased across all categories, with the travel intermediation category registering the largest growth at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.73%. Accommodation accounted for the largest proportion of total inbound tourist expenditure in 2012 with a share of 24.7%. This number is expected to grow towards 2017, recording the highest CAGR of 4.49%. According to the report, travel intermediation will grow at a CAGR of 4.31% and transportation at a CAGR of 4.04%. This situation is possible due to the nation’s tourist board profiling and targeting Asian markets, in particular China.
