U.S. citizen outbound totaled 6.9 million travelers in July

The National Travel & Tourism Office (NTTO) of United States announced the outbound travel statistics for July 2013.

paris-slideU.S. travel to overseas markets (1) totaled 3.1 million, up almost two percent in July and one percent for the year (17.6 million). Regional results for the month were as follows:

  • Europe, 1.3 million travelers, up three percent
  • Caribbean, 730,000 travelers, down one percent
  • Asia, 366,000 travelers, no growth
  • Central America, 279,000 travelers, up three percent
  • South America, 165,000 travelers, up six percent
  • Middle East, 139,000 travelers, up six percent
  • Oceania, 48,000 travelers, no growth
  • Africa, 36,000 travelers, down six percent
U.S. travel to other North American markets totaled 3.8 million and was down one percent compared to July 2012. Travel to Canada and Mexico for the year (18.7 million) was down one percent.

  • Mexico, 1.9 million travelers, down three percent; however, air travel (587,000) was up seven percent
  • Canada, 1.9 million travelers, up two percent; air travel (505,000) up 10 percent

U.S. travel to overseas locationsaccounted for 49 percent of U.S. outbound international travel.

  • Europe, a 19 percent share;
  • Caribbean, a 12 percent share;
  • Asia, a seven percent share;
  • Central America, a four percent share;
  • South America, a three percent share;
  • Middle East, a three percent share;
  • Oceania, a one percent share, and
  • Africa, a one percent share
North American markets received 51 percent of all U.S. international outbound travel.

  • U.S. travel to Mexico a 33 percent share; and
  • Canada a 19 percent share.
(1)   Overseas markets reflect non-stop air-only data. A portion of the non-stop passenger traffic to Europe will not visit Europe, but will connect through one of Europe's airline hubs (LHR, AMS, FRA, CDG, MAD, etc.) to Africa and the Middle East. The adjustment to these regions, reflecting visitation (1+ nights), occurs after year-end data is compiled.
