film tourism in Spain in the spotlight at Fitur Madrid

FITUR Screen 2024: Discovering the Magic of Film Locations in Spain

FITUR MADRID will promote screen tourism; also known as film tourism during the event. FITUR Screen is the monographic section at the event that takes place for the 6th edition, organized together Spain Film Commission with IFEMA MADRID.

Having a 99 m2 space in Hall 10 from 24 to 26 January 2024, FITUR Screen will offer a specialist networking area and will host an intensive programme focused on the promotion of screen tourism.

This new edition takes on the challenge of contributing to making Spain a global audiovisual hub and aims to become a platform for connecting the tourism and film industries through the dissemination of knowledge about screen tourism, commercial exchange between the industry’s different players and the formulation of future proposals for the development of this sector in Spain.

During the event, there will be a special presentation of two prestigious awards: the Spain Film Commission Ambassadors 2024 and the Spain Film Commission Best Production 2023. Additionally, the collaborative efforts between the Spain Film Commission and the UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) in promoting screen tourism will be highlighted, showcasing their joint initiatives in this exciting field.

Spain Screen Grand Tour

A centerpiece of the program is the Spain Screen Grand Tour, marking its first anniversary as the nation’s inaugural initiative to offer detailed tourist information on locations featured in movies, TV shows, documentaries, and music videos. Beyond its economic benefits, audiovisual production serves as a dynamic tool for tourism promotion, significantly enhancing the visibility of various regions. This innovative project represents a synergistic blend of two thriving sectors in Spain – tourism and the audiovisual industry – thereby enriching the Spain brand and amplifying the nation’s cultural and scenic appeal through the cinematic lens.

The upcoming edition of FITUR Screen will showcase the latest developments and future directions of the Spain Screen Grand Tour. This includes a dedicated website filled with inspiring content for travelers and Spain’s first-ever geolocation map pinpointing cinematic destinations. This evolving map invites tourists to embark on a unique journey across Spain, tracing the paths of film and production, offering a fresh and distinctive perspective of the country’s diverse locales.

Additionally, the event will reveal details of the partnership between the Spain Film Commission and the UNWTO in advancing screen tourism. This follows the project’s presentation at the 25th session of the UNWTO General Assembly in Uzbekistan, where it was selected by the UNWTO, further highlighting its global significance.

On Thursday, 25 January,  the round table “El turismo de pantalla, una tendencia de consumo internacional” (Screen tourism, an international consumer trend) will take place, which aims to show the current situation of this growing tourism sector from a national and international perspective.

On Friday, 26 January, the round table “¿Viajeros cinéfilos o cinéfilos viajeros?” (Film buffs or traveling film buffs?) will be held with the viewpoints of leading figures from the world of communication who will be analyzing the media impact of screen tourism.

On the same day, the third of the round tables will be organized, “Los rodajes, la mejor campaña promocional de un destino”(Film shoots, the best promotional campaign for a destination), with tourism agents as protagonists who will highlight the power of production as an attraction for today’s tourists.

The members of the Spain Film Commission territorial network participating in FITUR Screen 2024 are Andalucía Film Commission, Castilla La Mancha Film Commission, Region of Murcia Film Commission, Valladolid Film Commission, Zaragoza Film Office, Monegros Film Commission, Vigo Film Office, Castilla y León Film Commission, Navarra Film Commission.
