American actress Angelina Jolie will attend the 73rd San Sebastián Film Festival on September 21, where she will present Alice Winocour’s new film Couture, organizers announced.
The French director’s work will compete for the Golden Shell, the festival’s top award, during this year’s edition in northern Spain.
This marks Jolie’s first appearance at the prestigious Zinemaldia festival. She will be joined by French actor Louis Garrel and actress Garance Marillier, who also star in the film, alongside Anyier Anei and Ella Rumpf, whose participation had already been confirmed.
Winocour’s ‘Couture’ in Competition
Couture is set against the backdrop of Paris Fashion Week, where the lives of three women intersect as they navigate personal challenges. Jolie plays Maxime Walker, an American film director in her 40s diagnosed with breast cancer, who forms an unexpected relationship with a close collaborator, played by Garrel.
The film also follows Ana, portrayed by Anyier Anei, a newcomer to the fashion industry who escapes a predetermined future in South Sudan, and Angèle, a French make-up artist played by Ella Rumpf, working behind the scenes at runway shows. When their paths cross, the story highlights resilience and solidarity shared across different professions, cultures, and continents, according to the festival’s statement.
Star-Studded Lineup
Jolie, Garrel, and Marillier are the latest names added to an already extensive guest list. Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence is set to receive one of the two Donostia Awards this year, with the first presented to producer Esther García earlier in the festival. Irish actor Colin Farrell will also be among the prominent international stars traveling to San Sebastián.
Festival organizers emphasized the presence of numerous directors, including Alice Winocour, who previously competed in the Official Selection with Proxima. With Couture, she returns to the competition aiming to secure the Golden Shell.
The 73rd edition of the San Sebastián Film Festival continues to strengthen its reputation as a leading event in European cinema. Alongside screenings, the festival serves as a meeting point for global industry professionals, bringing together acclaimed actors, directors, and producers in northern Spain. The inclusion of Jolie in this year’s program adds to its international profile and public appeal.
