Singer Dies on Flight After Swallowing 77 Bags of Cocaine

A French singer and father of three died on a flight from Paris to Réunion Island in January after swallowing 77 cocaine-filled bags that ruptured inside his body.

The 40-year-old man from Montpellier was found dead mid-flight, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Djibouti. An autopsy later confirmed he had a massive concentration of cocaine in his blood.

Forensic experts determined the victim had ingested the drugs in poorly packaged condoms, several of which were no longer airtight, causing a fatal overdose. The death triggered a judicial investigation that has since expanded across three continents, linking traffickers in mainland France to drug routes stretching from Réunion Island and French Polynesia to San Francisco. A man suspected of recruiting drug mules has been charged and imprisoned.

Debt, Recruitment and a Fatal Journey

Investigators found the victim had previously made similar trips, including flights to French Polynesia and Réunion Island, apparently to transport drugs. People close to him told investigators he had fallen into debt because of his own cocaine use. To repay the money, he allegedly agreed to act as a drug mule for Parisian traffickers, as did several of his friends.

The Provost Brigade, a gendarmerie unit responsible for judicial missions within the French forces, was notified immediately after the emergency landing in Djibouti on 26 January 2025. The body was repatriated to France, where the autopsy was carried out. The investigation was subsequently handed to police in Montpellier.

Network Exposed Across Three Continents

Several suspects believed to lead the trafficking network left French territory after news of the death became known. A second courier from Montpellier was later identified after being deported from San Francisco, where he was detained during a layover on a flight to Tahiti carrying 169 grams of cocaine and 59 grams of MDMA. He had already made previous trips to Réunion Island in a similar capacity.

According to investigators, drug mules within the network were subjected to pressure and threats to repay the value of lost drugs, even after one of them had died. A man suspected of recruiting the couriers was charged and remanded in custody at the end of March. He denied any coercion, claiming he “did not force anyone,” said investigators cited in the case file.

A judicial investigation has been opened in Montpellier on charges including drug trafficking, involuntary manslaughter, administration of harmful substances resulting in death, money laundering and human trafficking. The investigation, which spans Montpellier, Réunion Island, Tahiti and San Francisco, remains ongoing.
