A Ukraine International Airlines plane carrying at least 170 people on Wednesday crashed shortly after takeoff from Imam Khomeini Airport in Tehran, Iran.
Iran state television said all those aboard are dead. Iranian civil aviation officials said the crash is thought to have been caused by mechanical problems.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a Facebook post that the country's embassy in Iran is "working to clarify information on the circumstances of the tragedy and the list of deceased passengers."
According to Flightradar24, flight 752, a Boeing 737-800 plane departed at 6:12 a.m. local time (9:42 p.m. Tuesday ET) and was bound for Kyiv, Ukraine.
Civil aviation spokesman Reza Jafarzadeh said a team of investigators was dispatched to the crash site on the southwestern outskirts of Tehran.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko revealed that among those killed in Wednesday’s crash were: 82 Iranians, 11 Ukrainians, 63 Canadians, Four Afghans, three Germans, three British nationals and 10 Swedes.
Iranian state TV is reporting that 32 of the passengers on board were foreigners and 147 were Iranian; many of those killed held dual citizenship.
