Orlando International Airport Announces Impact of the COVID-19 in 2020

The final passenger numbers are in for the pandemic year of 2020 and Orlando International Airport (MCO) was not exempt from the effects of the virus.

Overall, traffic was down more than 57 percent for the year to 21.6 million passengers from a record high of 50.6 million set in 2019.

“The year-end numbers accurately reflect the impact of the COVID-19 virus on Orlando International Airport and the aviation industry in general,” says Phil Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “We are adapting to a significant change in our operating environment with a focus on executing on the fundamentals of safety, security and excellent customer service.”

Brown predicts 2021 will also be challenging for MCO and the aviation industry overall and doesn’t believe that MCO will see pre-COVID-19 traffic levels until at least 2025.

2020 Year end Statistical Data:

  • Domestic traffic was down 53.98 percent with a total of 19,999,356 passengers at MCO
  • International traffic was off 77 .40 percent with a total of 1,618,447 international travelers at Orlando International
  • Combined, total traffic was down 57 .29 percent with 21,617,803 passengers traveling through MCO in 2020

December 2020 Statistical Data:

  • Domestic passenger traffic was down 49.85 percent with 2,024,861 total travelers at MCO
  • International traffic declined 85.77 percent with 85,480 passengers
  • Combined, overall traffic was off 54.5 percent with a total of 2,1 10,341 passengers in December
