The 10th Congress of the Turkish Transplantation Centers Coordination Association (Transplantation 2014) was organized on October, 15 -18, 2014 at the Hilton Resort & Spa in Turkbuku / Bodrum with almost 500 attendees by DEKON.
The great success of Transplantation 2014 was manifested by the high number of speakers and attendees, also celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Turkish Transplantation Centers Coordination Association.
The aim of Transplantation 2014 was - Contributing to the solution of low organ transplantation and cadaveric organ transplantation which is the most significant problem in Turkey, by creating a scientific platform where young researchers meet experts to share new scientific techniques and new developments in organ transplantation.
Congress Chairman and President of the association, Prof. Dr. Ulug Eldegez, opened the congress with the Honorary President Prof. Dr. Tuncer Karpuzoğlu and the Minister of Youth & Sports of the Republic of Turkey Akif Cagatay Kılıc.
One of the highlights was the keynote by Refiye Yılmaz. She told her extraordinary life story, being one in a million having the disease called ‘Gardner Syndrome’. She talked about the miracle she had been through, receiving multiple-organ transplants, conducted at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, USA, the only hospital able to do such this kind of surgery. Many fundraising campaigns had been started in her support and at the end the Ministry of Health decided to cover all the expenses for her surgery. Mid April 2013 she went to Miami for her treatment and was operated by the American doctors Rodrigo Virginnia and Thiago Beduchi and by the Turkish Doctor Akın Tekin. During the serial transplantations Refiye Yılmaz’s stomach, pancreas, duodenum and large intestine have been transplanted within one week. After her small intestine has been transplanted the worlds’ second biggest multiple-organ transplantation has been made.
Besides an interesting scientific program the participants were amazed with an attractive social program. Another highlight was a trip to Kos Island to visit the famed Tree of Hippocrates, where the father of medicine taught his pupils. And at the gala dinner, after a successful congress, the famous singer Fedon took the stage and entertained the attendees at the Gala Dinner.
