Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism becomes Lead Sponsor of Istancool

The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism is proud to be Lead Sponsor of the Istancool cultural festival 2-4 July 2010, hosted by the global British cultural diplomacy brand Liberatum,

bringing an eclectic mix of leading cultural and fashion figures from London, Milan, Paris and New York with Turkish audiences.

istancool_logo.jpgThis partnership will help to increase global awareness of Istanbul and Turkey's unique cultural landscape - both historic and modern; as well as strengthening cultural relations between the UK/US and Turkey.

Many of the festival events are open to the public free of charge, thus strengthening grass roots diplomacy and offering a diverse, eclectic and inspiring program to Istanbulites. Additionally, this event is a highlight in Istanbul's cultural calendar as ‘European Capital of Culture' for 2010.

This sponsorship builds on Turkey's huge success in hosting major events and international guests from around the world, from the Global Spa Summit in May to the 2010 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Men's World Championship later this year.  Indeed, last year, Turkey hosted 26 million visitors with this figure is set to grow further in 2010; 8 million visitors arrived in Turkey in the first five months of 2010, translating to a year-on-year increase of 10%.  Turkey also remains a hugely popular destination with British visitors, 2.43 million of them arriving from the UK last year - behind only Germany and Russia.

Mr. Ertugrul Gunay, Turkish Minster of Culture and Tourism says "we are proud to be Lead Sponsor for Istancool this year, a project that will further strengthen the links we've been making over the years between Turkey and the rest of the world, whilst bringing together a diverse range of cultural leaders in an eclectic program of events.   The program is aligned with our long-term commitment to promoting Turkey's incredibly diverse range of cultural and touristic offerings to the rest of the world, inspiring dialogue and greater understanding on both sides."

"We thought Istanbul would be perfect for our 10th anniversary of Liberatum with it also being European Capital of Culture 2010," said Pablo Ganguli, founder of the festival: "I want to thank the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the city and country in general, for being so supportive of the festival - and warmly welcoming our international guests."

The programme will include exhibitions, performances, art installations, fashion showcase, talks, discussions, Q&As, film screenings and masterclasses. Guests will include leading actors, designers, musicians, directors, artists, authors and media figures such as Nobel Laureate Sir VS Naipaul, Philip Treacy, Zaha Hadid, Academy Award® nominated director Lee Daniels, Taner Ceylan, Jefferson Hack, Gore Vidal, Terence Koh, Gareth Pugh, Lily Cole, Haluk Akakce, Academy Award® nominated musician Michael Nyman, Waris Ahluwalia, Elif Shafak, Academy Award® nominated director Stephen Frears, Franca Sozzani, Alfred Dunhill creative director Kim Jones Serdar Gulgun, The Misshapes (Leigh Lezark and Geordon Nicol), Mike Figgis, Wallpaper editor in chief Tony Chambers, Daphne Guinness, Leyla Umar, Academy Award® nominated screenwriter and author Hanif Kureishi among many others.
