The 2013 edition of the annual “Carnaval International de Victoria” that is staged in the Seychelles from the 8th to the 10th February 2013 is seeing final touches fall into place.
This year’s edition of this Indian Ocean Vanilla Island Regional Organization’s Carnival is jointly by Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar and Zimbabwe.
The list of International Delegations making their way to Seychelles has been welcomed by Elsia Grandcourt, the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board after she launched the 2013 carnival compilation music CD that is now already available for purchase.
This music compilation CD of 10 carnival songs has been produced following a song competition that was launched by the Seychelles Tourism Board, the main organiser of this unique event that will be held next year between 8 and 10 February, 2013.
The 10 winning songs to feature on the music CD of the next carnival, beginning with the first winner are: ‘Nou Karnaval’ (Micheal Savy – Ion Kid), ‘Karnaval O Victoria’ (SeyToile – Terrence, Terry & Angelique), ‘Carnaval Aux Seychelles’ (Daniella Larue), ‘Carnaval Aux Seychelles’ (Earonn Humhrey), ‘Karnaval dan Kapital’ (Clifford Alexis), ‘Carnaval des Seychelles’ (Herve Adrienne – Liba), ‘Karnaval Viktorya’ (Clency Marengo (Curious), ‘Karnaval Ankor Enn Fwa’ (Louise, Ivan, Andy & Andrew), ‘En lot Edisyon Karnaval’ (Eclispe – Herbert, Aubrey & Hubert) and ‘Karnaval Mae Sesel’ (Yannick Raoudy).
Interestingly there was a tie between the last two songs, with both coming out in ninth place.
Altogether there were a total of 18 entries, and the 10 best songs that were short-listed as winners by a seven member jury were awarded with cash prizes, ranging between Rs 25, 000 and Rs 2, 500.
The cash prize of Rs 25, 000 went to the first winner. The second winner took home Rs15, 000, the third won Rs10, 000 and forth the Rs 5, 000. The fifth winner received Rs3, 000 while the remaining winners were each rewarded with Rs2, 500.
The 2013 “Carnaval International de Victoria” song competition was based on seven criteria. It was opened to musical artists of all ages, who could have entered the competition either as a solo artist or a group. All songs entries had to be in Creole, and should have not lasted more than 5 minutes and they had to ensure that it their own original composition and had not been previously released on any CD, cassette, and on any compilation or in other lyrics. It was also important for the song to have not been previously aired on any radio stations, televisions and in any night clubs. The theme was opened and the artists could have any aspect of the Seychelles Creole culture. Interested artists had to submit their song entries on a CD before 1 October, 2012.
The 10 winning songs was revealed to the public during the official launching ceremony of the Countdown of “Carnaval International de Victoria” 2013, which was held at the Tequila Boom night club on 30 November, 2012.
All winners of the competition were awarded with their prizes at the ceremony. Presenting them their rewards were the Seychelles Minister for Tourism & Culture, Alain St.Ange, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Elsia Grandcourt in the presence of the Minister of Home Affairs and Transport Joel Morgan and other guests.
Four of the winning artists had the opportunity of performing their songs during the ceremony while the rest will have the chance to perform during the carnival weekend.
The “Carnaval International de Victoria” compilation music CD is on sale at various sales points, including the Seychelles national Arts Council store in Victoria, the Seychelles Tourism Office in Victoria and Praslin, as well as the Board’s its head office in Bel Ombre and at the stall at the Victoria Post Office.The 2013 compilation music CD costs scr100/-, and comes with two bonus tracks from the two previous editions namely: ‘Carnaval de Carnaval’ by Patrick Victor and ‘Sa Karnaval’ by Jean-Marc Volcy.
