Van hits into crowd on Barcelona's Las Ramblas

barcelona van crushed crowdA van has plowed into a crowd of people in Barcelona, causing several injuries. The incident took place near Barcelona’s popular tourist area of Las Ramblas.

Reuters reported that Catalan emergency services have requested the closure of metro and train stations in the vicinity of the incident.

Videos on the social media and Spanish news channels show many injured. Police were unable to give a motive for the incident, however it looks like it is a deliberate attack.

At least 13 dead according to local media.

Within hours, the Islamic State claimed that the perpetrators were its “soldiers,” adding Spain to the list of European countries — including France, Britain and Germany — where vehicles have been used in attacks on civilians.
