A man drove a Home Depot rental truck onto a bike path for more than a mile in lower Manhattan, killing at least eight people and injuring at least 11.
The suspect, a 29-year-old male, then got out of the truck and brandished what turned out to be fake guns. They were later determined to be a paintball and a pellet gun.
He reportedly shouted Allahu Akbar, which means “God is great” in Arabic, before a nearby police officer shot him in the stomach and taken into custody.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has confirmed the truck attack that killed eight people is a terrorist attack, and Governor Andrew Cuomo told reporters there was no indication of a wider plot.
Police have confirmed that the incident began just after 3:00pm, when the suspect drove onto the bike path at West Street Houston Street. While driving south, the truck hit a school bus near Chambers Street.
