Catena Zapata Tops World's Best Vineyards 2023 List, Rioja Shines as Premier Wine Tourism Destination

The World's Best Vineyards unveiled its prestigious list of top wine destinations for 2023.

The comprehensive compilation celebrates the finest vineyards worldwide, showcasing the diversity and excellence of wine tourism. Topping this year's list is Catena Zapata from Argentina, which not only secured the title of the overall South American vineyard but also claimed the coveted position as the world's best vineyard. Bodegas de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal, located in the breathtaking Rioja region of Spain, secured second place and was named the top vineyard in Europe.

With an extensive list of exceptional vineyards, this year's rankings reflect the global prominence of wine destinations. Chilean vineyard VIK climbed one place to claim the third spot, while Creation in South Africa took fourth place and emerged as the overall winner in Africa.

 

 

Argentina emerged as a strong contender on the list, with three vineyards making it to the top 10. Catena Zapata, founded in 1902 and renowned for its pioneering work in reinventing Malbec, secured the number one spot. Bodegas Salentein, considered the heart and soul of the Uco Valley, claimed the ninth position, while El Enemigo Wines celebrated both tradition and innovation at number ten. Notably, Finca Victoria from the Durigutti family in Mendoza made an impressive debut as the highest new entry at number thirteen.

Europe dominated the rankings with 23 vineyards making it to the list. France stood out with the highest number of wineries, boasting nine in the top 50. Among them were esteemed Champagne houses such as Maison Ruinart, Bollinger, Billecart-Salmon, and Veuve Clicquot. The 2023 edition welcomed first-time entrants from Hungary, Georgia, and Lebanon, showcasing the expanding reach of wine tourism.

 

 

Continent winners included Château Mercian Mariko Winery in Japan, Rippon in Central Otago, New Zealand, and Jordan Vineyard and Winery nestled in the hills of Sonoma County's Alexander Valley.

In a moment of great significance, Antinori nel Chianti Classico (Marchesi Antinori), the Best Vineyard in the World 2022, was inducted into the World's Best Vineyards Hall of Fame, reserved for vineyards that consistently dominate the rankings.

The highly anticipated announcement took place at Bodegas Beronia, an esteemed winery located in the heart of Rioja Alta. Known for its sustainable practices, the winery attracted media from around the world. Rioja, Spain's premier wine region, had two of its wineries featured in the top 50: Bodegas de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal at number two and Bodegas Muga at number 49.

Andrew Reed, Managing Director of Wine and Exhibitions at William Reed, expressed the significance of the World's Best Vineyards in promoting wine tourism globally. He emphasized the growing demand among both local and international tourists for immersive experiences that offer a wide range of activities. Reed praised Rioja as a remarkable host, with its stunning landscapes, delectable cuisine, and, of course, its exceptional wines.

Fernando Ezquerro, Chairman of the QDO Rioja Regulatory Board, expressed his pride and delight in hosting the esteemed event. He highlighted Rioja's historical significance and traditions, which have established the region as Spain's premier winemaking destination. Furthermore, Ezquerro emphasized the transformative effect of wine tourism on Spain's tourism industry, bringing about seasonality and diversification. He concluded by underlining the passion for hospitality and winemaking that makes Rioja a truly special place to visit.

With Catena Zapata claiming the top spot, Rioja's Bodegas de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal securing second place and being named the top vineyard in Europe, and a wealth of exceptional vineyards from around the world, the World's Best Vineyards 2023 list solidifies the global prominence and allure of wine tourism.
