The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is gearing up for its 25th General Assembly, set to be a pivotal event for the global tourism sector.
With the assembly just a week away, leaders from over 150 countries are anticipated to gather in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 18-19 October. The biennial event serves as UNWTO’s supreme governing body, offering a platform for member states from all regions to discuss the organization’s work plan and address pressing challenges in the tourism industry.
Prominent figures from various international organizations, including the United Nations, have lauded UNWTO’s efforts in steering tourism through challenging times and towards a path of recovery and transformation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the significance of tourism as a bridge between cultures and a promoter of sustainable development. He expressed confidence in UNWTO’s vision to foster a brighter future for both people and the planet.
Marking the assembly’s significance, the UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili, will present a comprehensive report to members, spotlighting the organization’s achievements over the past two years. The focus will be on tourism investments, education, and innovation. Additionally, several key UNWTO bodies will convene during the assembly, and thematic events centered on the organization’s current priorities for the sector will be held.
One of the highlights of the assembly will be the announcement of UNWTO’s Best Tourism Villages 2023 in Samarkand, celebrating exemplary instances of tourism contributing to rural development.
