Where is the cheapest beer during Octoberfest 2017?

octoberfest12Munich's famous beer festival Oktoberfest, which attracts around six million visitors annually, will start on Saturday, September 16th. The Schottenhamel tent is the place to be, if you want to catch the official opening ceremonies. At noon, the Mayor of Munich will have the honor of tapping the first keg of Oktoberfest beer. Once the barrel has been tapped, all visitors will then be allowed to quench their thirst.

It pays to arrive early in order to experience the festivities up close and personal and it's quite common for visitors to come around 9 am to secure good seats. The festival will last until October 3rd.

As usual, over 6 million liters of beer will be drunk this year.

Beer will be sold in the tents from 10 a.m to 10:30 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on saturdays, sundays and holidays.

For 2017, there is one good and one bad news. First, the good one! The 11€-line hasn’t been crossed this year. The bad news: Non-alcoholic drinks get a lot more expensive.

The Mass (1 liter of beer) will cost you something between 10.60€ and 10.95€ this year. That is an average increase of 2.55% compared to last year’s beer prices. Fischer-Vroni, Schottenhamel-Festhalle and the Winzerer Fähndl sell the beer at the highest price this year. The cheapest beer can be found at the Museum Tent at the Old Wiesn and at the Familienplatzl (Family Square).

Munich officials are planning to raise the contingent rent for tent proprietors to get back the money for the higher expenses for security services like baggage checks and entrance controls. In some tents, this leads not only the higher prices for beer but also for lemonade and mineral water. In the Weinzelt, at 11.60€, a liter of water is even more expensive than a liter of beer in any other tent!
