Shanghai Welcomed 16.8 Million Tourists During the May Day Holiday


Labor Day is also known as May Day and is a public holiday in many countries across the world. And according to the latest data, Shangai enjoyed a record number of visitors during the 2021 May Day holiday.

During the May Day holiday, the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism made significant achievements in epidemic prevention and control, work safety, product supply in cultural and tourism markets, and boosting consumption through the integration of culture and tourism.

Cultural and tourism sectors made every effort to build a defense line for the safety of citizens and tourists, carefully created a reassuring travel atmosphere for citizens and tourists, vigorously promoted the recovery of consumption in cultural and tourism markets, and constantly met the quality and safety requirements of Shanghai citizens and visitors to Shanghai.



According to Shanghai’s tourism big data, the city received 16.889 million tourists during the May Day holiday, up 138.88% year on year from 2020.

The number of tourists from other provinces and cities reached 6.249,600, accounting for 37% of the total number of tourists.

According to UnionPay’s consumption big data, tourist spending during the May Day holiday was about ¥40 billion (approx. 6.2 billion USD).
