Avelo Airlines, the burgeoning American carrier, has announced a new nonstop service connecting Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) in Southern Connecticut and San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in Puerto Rico.
This route, which marks Avelo’s first venture outside the continental United States, will begin operation on November 15, 2023, with introductory one-way fares starting at $99.
Andrew Levy, Chairman and CEO of Avelo Airlines, expressed his anticipation for the impact of this new route. With a rising Puerto Rican population in Connecticut, the nonstop service offers a convenient and cost-effective travel option for community members looking to reconnect with friends and family in Puerto Rico. Levy is equally enthusiastic about the potential influx of Puerto Rican visitors to Connecticut, given the affordability and convenience of the new route.
The service, scheduled twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, will employ Boeing Next-Generation (NG) 737 aircraft. This makes Avelo the first and sole airline to offer a nonstop service between Southern Connecticut and Puerto Rico.
The news of the new route was received positively by political figures in Connecticut. Governor Ned Lamont praised Avelo’s expansion at Tweed Airport, particularly the San Juan route, citing its potential to bolster the region’s economic competitiveness and improve residents’ quality of life. Senator Richard Blumenthal echoed these sentiments, highlighting the significant benefits the new service offers to Connecticut’s large Puerto Rican population.
The route announcement was made at a Puerto Rico-themed ceremony at Tweed Airport, featuring Puerto Rican food, entertainment by Movimiento Cultural Bomba Band, and the presence of Avelo leaders alongside local and state political, community, and business officials.
Avelo Airlines, since its inaugural flight on April 28, 2021, has flown nearly three million customers on over 20,000 flights, fostering a new era of convenient and affordable air travel. With the launch of this new route, Avelo continues to broaden its flight network to underserved communities across the country and beyond.
