Dutch capital Amsterdam, which is one of the most visited cities in Europe, will charge a flat fee of €3 (about $3.25) per person, per night for any visitor spending the night in Amsterdam; starting from January 1, 2020.
This tax is on top of 7 percent tax on room rates that the city already charges. Private Airbnb and houseboat owners are also required to collect the 7% tax and pay the city.
This latest price hike will likely make Amsterdam’s tourist taxes the highest in Europe.
Amsterdam also charges €8 ($12.90) to every cruise ship passenger that visits the city, even if they are not staying overnight in the city. The cruise line is responsible for declaring the number of passengers and paying the tax to the Port of Amsterdam.
Amsterdam was already suffering from over-tourism and recorded 18 million annual visitors last year while the number of residents in the city is about 867,000.
