Malaysia to Reopen Borders

Malaysia to Reopen Borders to Int’l Travelers

Following the announcement of Malaysia – Singapore border reopening, Malaysia’s National Recovery Council proposed reopening borders to foreign travelers by January 1, 2022.

Starting Monday, Nov. 15, Malaysia will allow fully-vaccinated tourists from select countries to visit the northern resort island of Langkawi without quarantine.

While tourists of this Langkawi international travel bubble would not be subject to any quarantine period, their stay would have to last at least three days. These tourists have to take a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test 72 hours prior to their departure to Langkawi.

Those arriving via the Kuala Lumpur International Airport would have to undergo rapid molecular testing upon arrival, while travelers heading straight to Langkawi would undergo a RT-PCR test for COVID-19 on their second day after arrival.

These travelers are also required to be insured for a minimum of US$80,000 (RM332,000).

Currently, foreign nationals from the U.S. and other countries need written approval from the Malaysian government or a specific long-term travel pass to enter the country, according to the U.S. Embassy.
