Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines Announce Commercial Joint Venture

Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines (SIA) have received approval from the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) for their commercial joint venture agreement.

With this approval, the airlines will be able to deepen their strategic partnership on a wider range of commercial activities that will bring greater benefits to both airlines, as well as Indonesia and Singapore.

The joint venture will see Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines operating joint revenue-sharing flights between the two countries, coordinating flight schedules to offer travelers more options and seamless connectivity between Singapore and Indonesia, and exploring joint sales and marketing initiatives. These efforts aim to provide greater value to the airlines’ customers and enhance their travel experience.

Since the signing of the partnership agreement in May 2023, the airlines have made considerable progress. Initiatives include allowing GarudaMiles and KrisFlyer members to earn and redeem miles on codeshare routes and embarking on joint marketing campaigns to promote tourism.

The airlines currently codeshare on numerous flights, including routes between Singapore and major Indonesian cities like Bali, Jakarta, Medan, and Surabaya, as well as long-haul routes to Johannesburg, London (Heathrow), and Mumbai.

Garuda Indonesia’s President and CEO, Irfan Setiaputra, expressed his satisfaction with the approval, stating, “We are very pleased to receive this approval, as it marks significant progress towards our commitment to enhancing service quality and broadening both Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines’ networks. This joint venture initiative is one of the strategies to ensure extensive value creation for our loyal customers.”

Singapore Airlines’ CEO, Goh Choon Phong, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the strengthened partnership. “The robust strategic partnership between Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines has enabled us to broaden our codeshare services over the last few years, offering our customers more choices on flights. With the CCCS’s approval, we are poised to deepen our collaboration across a wider scope of commercial activities.”

The joint venture is expected to provide seamless services for passengers, offering more flight schedule options and easier ways to earn and redeem mileage. Additionally, this collaboration aims to boost Indonesian tourism activities, supporting post-pandemic economic recovery.

With this new commercial joint venture, Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines are set to enhance connectivity, improve travel experiences, and contribute to the economic growth of both nations.
