Renfe’s Youth Program Hits Two Million Tickets Sold in 2024

Renfe’s Verano Joven program, designed to offer discounted travel for young people between the ages of 18 and 30, has achieved remarkable success in 2024, with more than two million tickets sold since its launch on June 19.

The initiative allows young travelers to explore Spain and other parts of Europe with significant savings, making it an appealing option for summer travel.

A Surge in Youth Travel

The popularity of Renfe’s youth program is evident in the numbers. In just two months, the program has sold an average of over 32,000 tickets daily, nearly matching the total sales from the entire previous edition, which ran from June 6 to September 15, 2023, and resulted in 2.1 million tickets sold.

This year, the two million tickets sold represent a 46% increase in participation compared to the same period last year, when 1.37 million tickets were sold in the first two months of the program.

The success of this initiative highlights a growing trend among young travelers in Spain, who are increasingly taking advantage of these discounts to explore new destinations both within the country and across Europe.

Extra Incentives for Loyalty

In addition to the government-approved discounts, Renfe has introduced an extra promotion for young members of its Más Renfe loyalty program. These travelers are eligible for a free ticket after completing two journeys between July 1 and September 30, 2024. This promotion further incentivizes young people to make the most of their summer travels, offering them even more value for their money.

The discounts provided under this program are substantial. Young travelers can enjoy up to 50% off tickets for high-speed trains (AVE and Avlo) and long-distance services, with a maximum discount of 30 euros per ticket. The same 50% discount applies to Avant single tickets, and for medium-distance or metric gauge services, the discounts go up to 90%.

How to Claim Your Interrail Discount

The Summer Youth program offers 50% discounts on the Interrail Flexible Global of 10 days in 2 months, as long as it is purchased through Renfe, so that young people aged 18 to 30 can travel in Europe.

To take advantage of the measure, young Spaniards or foreigners with legal residence in Spain, born between 1994 and 2006, must register on the form available on the website of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to confirm that they meet the required requirements.

If you meet them, you will get a personal and non-transferable code that you can use to purchase discounted tickets and the Interrail pass. After registration, it must be at least 24 hours before making the first purchase to verify that the eligibility requirements are met.

Renfe’s commitment to making travel more accessible for young people is evident in the success of the Verano Joven program. With the program running until September 30, 2024, it’s clear that many more young travelers will be seizing the opportunity to explore Spain and beyond at reduced rates.
