Ethiopian Airlines Partners with DRC to Launch Air Congo

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest aviation group, has joined forces with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) government to launch a new national carrier, Air Congo.

The DRC government holds a 51% majority stake, while Ethiopian Airlines owns 49% and will oversee the airline’s operations.

The collaboration is a milestone for regional air transport, enhancing connectivity across the DRC and Central Africa. Air Congo’s launch aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ ongoing mission to improve air travel across the continent and boost economic opportunities.

Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “The launch of Air Congo is a significant step in our strategic plan to collaborate with African governments and enhance air transport across the continent. This partnership will provide greater connectivity for the DRC and Central Africa, facilitating investment, trade, and tourism, thereby contributing to socio-economic growth of the region.”

Air Congo began operations with two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, serving domestic markets across seven airports in the DRC. These early routes are designed to address the need for reliable air travel within the region, supporting economic growth and fostering connections among key cities.

To ensure seamless operations, Ethiopian Airlines has signed multiple technical agreements with the DRC government. These include aircraft leasing, technical support, and systems management. Ethiopian Airlines will also take the lead in training Congolese nationals, equipping them to become pilots, cabin crew, sales staff, and technicians, fostering long-term local expertise and workforce development.

This launch is a critical component of Ethiopian Airlines’ ambitious Vision 2035 strategy, which aims to establish multiple hubs across Africa. The strategy includes existing partnerships with other regional carriers such as ASKY Airlines in Lomé, Malawi Airlines in Lilongwe, and Zambia Airways in Lusaka. By creating a network of operational hubs, Ethiopian Airlines is reinforcing its role as a leader in African aviation.

Air Congo’s establishment marks a new era for Central Africa’s aviation landscape. With Ethiopian Airlines’ expertise and management, the airline is expected to improve accessibility, support trade, and attract tourism within the DRC and neighboring countries. The partnership signifies progress toward a stronger, interconnected Africa.
