Smartwings, the largest airline in the Czech Republic, recorded a significant surge in passenger numbers in 2024, carrying 8.3 million passengers.
This represents a 20.1% increase compared to the previous year and an impressive 16.3% growth over pre-pandemic levels in 2019. The airline’s strong performance underscores its recovery and growing popularity on both scheduled and charter flights.
Out of the total passengers, 6.5 million were carried on Smartwings’ own routes, while an additional 1.85 million traveled on flights operated for other carriers under leasing agreements. The airline operated 53,338 flights throughout the year, serving 318 airports worldwide, marking an 11% increase in total flight operations compared to 2023.
The Czech Republic saw the most substantial growth, with 4.3 million passengers flying from six airports across the country, including Prague, Brno, and Ostrava. Smartwings offered flights to 70 destinations from Czech airports, and its busiest months, July and August, saw approximately 1.3 million passengers each month. The airline also maintained a high average flight occupancy rate of 86.11%.
In addition to its operations in the Czech Republic, Smartwings flew from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, Portugal, and the Canary Islands. The airline’s winter schedule includes direct flights to popular destinations such as Dubai, the Canary Islands, Madeira, Paris, and Tel Aviv. Charter flights also connect Czech travelers to more exotic locations like Zanzibar, Cape Verde, Oman, and Kenya.
Smartwings’ achievements in 2024 extend beyond passenger numbers. The airline successfully renewed its IOSA operational safety audit by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), reaffirming its commitment to safety and reliability. Additionally, Smartwings secured leasing contracts (ACMI) with major international carriers, including Eurowings, Air Transat, and flydubai, further boosting its operations.
Looking ahead, the airline anticipates another strong summer season in 2025 and plans to expand its fleet. Smartwings, which currently operates 46 aircraft, is set to add six new planes in the coming year to meet growing demand.
With consistent growth, a focus on safety, and an expanding route network, Smartwings continues to solidify its position as a key player in European aviation, connecting travelers to destinations worldwide.
