Omicron- Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo Postpone Official Carnival Parade

On January 21, the mayors of Rio, Eduardo Paes, and São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes organized a meeting and sealed the joint decision to postpone the carnival samba school parades to the Tiradentes holiday.

The world-famous carnivals will be held in late April rather than the final weekend of February, as the number of coronavirus cases in Brazil spikes and the omicron variant spreads across the country.

The carnival samba school parades to the Tiradentes holiday, on April 21.

The street carnival had already been canceled in the country’s two largest cities.

With the postponement, the parade dates would be as follows, according to a first preview made by people connected to the samba schools:

Wednesday (20 April 2022) – First day of Access Group (Group B)
Thursday (21 April 2022) – Second day of Access Group (Group B)
Friday (22 April 2022) – First day of the Special Group (Group A)
Saturday (23 April 2022) – Second day of the Special Group (Group A)
Sunday (24 April 2022) – Children’s Parade
Tuesday (26 April 2022) – Counting of votes
Saturday (30 April 2022) – Winners Parade
