The rich history of a 13th-century Dominican convent gets a modern facelift as IHG Hotels & Resorts adds the Convent Square Lisbon to its Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio.
The hotel offers 121 rooms in the heart of Lisbon and emerges as the second Vignette Collection property in Europe and the sixth worldwide, as part of IHG’s ambitious plan to reach 100 properties in a decade.
In the bustling Baixa neighborhood, Convent Square Lisbon provides a sanctuary in a city known for its vibrant nightlife and busy streets. Cobblestone pathways take guests to the hotel’s open-air cloister—a place for socialization under the open sky, enlivened by fire pits.
Tom Rowntree, Vice President of Luxury & Lifestyle Brands at IHG Hotels & Resorts, lauded the new addition, emphasizing its commitment to “harness travel’s ability to benefit people, place, and planet.” The Vignette Collection stands out for its authentic travel experiences, balancing individuality with a shared vision of sustainable luxury, distinction, and intrigue.
Beyond aesthetics and hospitality, the Convent Square Lisbon aims to connect guests to local culture. The hotel revives ancient Dominican practices by inviting guests to prepare daily herbal blends. The ritual pays homage to Portugal’s tea heritage, notably championed by Portuguese Princess Catherine of Braganza in the 17th century.
In addition to cultural enrichment, the hotel has a social mission. Partnering with non-profit organization Corações Com Coroa, Convent Square Lisbon will support women’s empowerment through housing, education, and hospitality internship programs.
As part of the hotel’s amenities, guests can experience the wellness suite featuring a sauna, fitness area, and indoor plunge pool. The hotel also offers an array of dining experiences, including Capitulo, an all-day dining room serving modern twists on Portuguese classics. The location is a stone’s throw from several of Lisbon’s tourist landmarks, like Rossio Square and Terreiro do Paço.
With an illustrious history dating back to 1242 and commissioned by King Sancho II, the property has transformed from a space of worship to one of wellness. Whether it’s a quiet moment in the cloister or an exploration of the city, Convent Square Lisbon promises a truly unique Lisbon experience.
Lisbon’s age-old cobblestone streets filled with traditional booksellers, cafes, and theatres are within walking distance. Rossio Square, Avenida da Liberdade, Terreiro do Paço, and famed Chiado are must-see hot spots of the city.
