In a momentous event for luxury travel enthusiasts, Sir Richard Branson’s latest venture, Son Bunyola Hotel and Villas, has officially opened its doors in the breathtaking Tramuntana Mountains of Mallorca.
With a rich history and meticulous restoration, this magnificent property aims to offer an unrivaled experience for those seeking luxury and tranquility on the island.
Sir Richard Branson’s love affair with Mallorca is no secret, having previously established one of the island’s most renowned hotels. His latest endeavor involves the acquisition of Son Bunyola, a 16th-century finca that boasts a sprawling 1300-acre estate, featuring almond and olive groves, vineyards, citrus fruit trees, and three miles of pristine Mediterranean coastline. The hotel, more than two decades in the making, is a testament to Branson’s determination to share this extraordinary location with the world.
Expressing his excitement about the opening, Sir Richard Branson said, “Today is a momentous day as we open our beautiful hotel, Son Bunyola. The northwest coast of Mallorca has always held a special place in my heart, and the historic finca on a UNESCO World Heritage site was waiting to be lovingly restored. We have the best and most unspoiled location on the island, with stunning natural surroundings and superb amenities. I cannot wait to welcome guests and share this magical place.”
Son Bunyola Hotel offers 26 impeccably designed rooms and suites, showcasing the renowned charm of Mallorca through the expert styling of local interior designer Rialto Living. The main finca and the Tafona, which previously housed the historic olive press, have been elegantly restored by local architect Gras, while additional annex buildings complement the estate’s allure. The hotel features two restaurants—a Mediterranean restaurant, a tapas restaurant—and multiple outdoor dining terraces, all overseen by Executive Chef Samuel G. Galdón.
For guests seeking relaxation and wellness, the hotel provides a comprehensive program amidst the natural beauty of the estate. Outdoor yoga sessions, historical walks around the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and two treatment rooms offer rejuvenation and tranquility. The impressive 28-meter swimming pool affords sweeping views of the famous Foradada and surrounding countryside. Activities such as hiking, biking, and tennis further enrich the guest experience.
The restoration of Son Bunyola Hotel pays homage to the finca’s rich history, dating back to the 1500s. The meticulous preservation of original features seamlessly blends with new designs, showcasing intricate details at every corner. From the original floor tiles and staircase to the historic oil press and altar, Sa Terrassa restaurant highlights the building’s heritage.
Son Bunyola Hotel stands on land believed to have been inhabited for thousands of years, with stone towers from the Bronze and Iron Ages scattered across the estate. This historical backdrop provides an ideal setting for hiking and biking, with dedicated estate bikes and trail maps that encompass the area’s rich history.
Vincent Padioleau, General Manager of Son Bunyola Hotel and Villas, expressed his excitement about the launch, stating, “This is such an exciting time as we launch the first European hotel for Virgin Limited Edition. Our passion project embodies all the values and experiences that Virgin Limited Edition stands for, in one of the most incredible locations in Mallorca. We are committed to building a strong community and have recruited over 80% of our staff from Spain. Our vision for Son Bunyola extends beyond being a luxury hotel; we aim to revive the estate’s agricultural side, bringing back farmland, vineyards, and the production of olive oil, almonds, and Malvasia wine.”
