Waldorf Astoria Opens in Costa Rica

Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica has officially opened its doors, bringing the legendary luxury brand to the shores of Guanacaste for the very first time. Set on the secluded Cacique Peninsula, the new Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique Resort and Residences is redefining upscale travel in one of the world’s most biodiverse regions.

Just 25 minutes from Liberia International Airport and framed by the golden beaches of Playa del Coco and Playa Hermosa, the resort is a gateway to Costa Rica’s famed “Blue Zone” lifestyle—where wellness, nature, and elegance coexist. The property is the centerpiece of a larger 600-acre development, Punta Cacique, envisioned as a luxurious yet authentic retreat for both short-term guests and long-term residents.

Where Ocean Views Meet Elevated Design

The Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique Resort features 188 guest rooms, including 40 suites, all offering uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean. The architecture blends seamlessly with the landscape, allowing the region’s natural beauty to take center stage while delivering the brand’s hallmark sophistication.

Guests can relax by a cascading multi-level pool or on the idyllic beachfront dotted with shaded cabanas. Six signature dining venues highlight fresh, local ingredients, while a 17,000-square-foot wellness sanctuary invites visitors to slow down and recharge with spa treatments, a fitness center, and movement classes. Kids and teens are also catered to, with immersive club programming designed to inspire adventure and creativity.

More Than a Resort: The Punta Cacique Vision

Backed by Revolution Places—the hospitality arm of AOL Co-founder Steve Case—Punta Cacique has been nearly two decades in the making. The master-planned community aims to offer a new model of immersive luxury rooted in sustainability and local culture. “When you arrive at Punta Cacique, you know immediately that you are in a special place,” said Steve Case. “The luxury and comfort level of the Waldorf, coupled with its track record of incredible service, made them the perfect partner.”

According to Neal Herman, President of Punta Cacique, the resort was designed to serve as both a tranquil hideaway and a basecamp for exploring Costa Rica. “Guests and residents come here seeking immersive luxury in a Blue Zone setting. With easy access to nearby beach communities and national parks, it’s the best of both worlds.”

Luxury Living by the Sea

The residential portion of the project, Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique Residences, includes 20 estate homes and 20 condominiums designed by a team of award-winning firms including Garnier & Garnier, Gensler, RoblesArq, and EDSA. With the condos already sold out, attention now turns to the estate homes—spacious, fully furnished four- and five-bedroom residences with private pools and expansive ocean-view terraces. The first homes are set to be delivered this summer, with residents enjoying full access to the resort and private community amenities.

A Timely Destination for Modern Travelers

Recognized by Travel & Leisure as 2024’s Destination of the Year, Costa Rica is celebrated for its pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and enduring commitment to sustainability. It runs nearly 100% on renewable energy and maintains robust infrastructure—including high-speed internet, quality healthcare, and two international airports. For North American travelers, the country’s alignment with Central Standard Time offers added convenience for both remote work and vacationing.

With year-round temperatures ranging from 24–35°C (mid-70s to low 90s Fahrenheit), the climate in Guanacaste invites year-round visits. Whether exploring local wildlife, diving into rainforest adventures, or savoring sunsets from a private infinity pool, Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique promises more than luxury—it offers a new way to experience the soul of Costa Rica.
