American Airlines Expands in Mexico

American Airlines expands in Mexico with the launch of its 30th destination in the country: Puerto Escondido. Starting December 3, travelers will have even more options to explore the vibrant culture, beaches, and cuisine of Mexico, thanks to a record-breaking schedule that makes American the largest U.S. airline operating in the country.

Located on the southern coast of Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido is a rising star in the world of beach getaways. It’s known for its laid-back vibe, warm Pacific waters, and stunning beaches ideal for both surfing and sunbathing. With its growing reputation as a tropical paradise, American Airlines has tapped into the increasing demand by launching direct flights from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), offering travelers a convenient new gateway to this coastal retreat.

American’s new service to Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) will operate twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The route will be served by the Embraer 175 aircraft, offering both economy and premium cabin options for travelers seeking extra comfort. The airline will be the only U.S. carrier with year-round flights to PXM, giving it a clear edge in connecting American tourists to one of Mexico’s most scenic destinations.

A Growing Network Across Mexico

This new route isn’t just a standalone update—it’s part of a larger strategy by American Airlines to strengthen its presence in Mexico. The country remains the most popular international destination for U.S. travelers, and American is meeting that demand with consistent growth. Earlier this year, the airline launched flights to three other destinations: Tijuana (TIJ), Tulum (TQO), and Veracruz (VER). Each offers its own distinct experiences, from border city buzz to eco-luxury and colonial charm.

In March, American added flights to Tampico (TAM), expanding access to the Gulf of Mexico’s commercial and cultural hub. Looking ahead, American will begin flights to Cancun (CUN) from Oklahoma, marking the only international service offered from that U.S. state. These additions reflect American’s ongoing investment in making Mexico more accessible and offering travelers greater variety when choosing their next vacation or business trip.

For those seeking a more authentic and off-the-beaten-path experience, Puerto Escondido offers a mix of natural beauty and vibrant local culture. While it may be less developed than other resort cities like Cancun or Cabo, that’s exactly what makes it special. Visitors can explore everything from the dramatic waves of Zicatela Beach—famous among surfers worldwide—to the serene waters of Playa Carrizalillo, ideal for a quiet swim. Local seafood, mezcal tastings, and colorful markets provide the perfect complement to a relaxing beachside escape.

The new flights to Puerto Escondido are just one part of American’s broader plan to stay ahead in the competitive Mexico travel market. With unmatched connectivity and more total destinations in Mexico than any other U.S. airline, American is positioning itself as the go-to carrier for travelers heading south of the border.

Whether you’re chasing waves, soaking in the sun, or exploring a new part of Mexico, American Airlines’ latest expansion makes it easier than ever to get there. So if Puerto Escondido isn’t on your travel radar yet, now might be the perfect time to see what this emerging destination has to offer.
