Etihad Airways and China Eastern Airlines have signed a landmark Joint Venture (JV). This historic agreement, signed at Etihad’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, is the first commercial JV between a Middle Eastern and a Chinese airline.
The Etihad-China Eastern JV will allow the two airlines to develop and grow routes between the UAE and China. This will result in a stronger combined network. The JV is committed to offering more travel options and seamless travel experiences for passengers traveling between major Chinese cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’an, and Kunming, and key cities in the UAE, the Middle East, and Africa.
The joint venture will begin in early 2025, after receiving all necessary regulatory clearances. Additionally, by the end of 2024, both airlines will introduce full reciprocity in their frequent flyer programs. This will allow passengers to earn and redeem points when flying with either airline.
Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, emphasized the importance of the partnership. He said, “This JV marks a significant milestone in our partnership with China Eastern. It will offer travelers enhanced options and exceptional value. We are confident it will unlock new travel opportunities and boost the economic growth of Abu Dhabi and the UAE.”
His Excellency Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of Etihad Aviation Group, called the agreement a landmark achievement. He stated, “This JV signifies a deep commitment to strengthening UAE-China relations. We look forward to welcoming more Chinese tourists to explore the UAE’s rich cultural heritage. This partnership is about creating lasting connections between our nations.”
Wang Zhiqing, Chairman of China Eastern Airlines, noted the significance of the timing. He said, “This year marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the UAE. Our JV with Etihad Airways signifies a new level of collaboration. China Eastern is eager to work with Etihad to expand cooperation in various business areas and enhance our strategic partnership.”
Chairman Wang added, “Both China Eastern and Etihad have strong global hubs. Our cooperation is highly complementary and has great potential. We look forward to creating more synergies, facilitating passenger travel, and building deeper economic, trade, and cultural exchanges between China and the UAE.”
