Iberia launched its flights to Madeira on Saturday, July 4, 2015. The Spanish airline, will fly to the Portuguese island up to three times weekly from Madrid from 4 July until 12 September, using 141-seat Airbus A319s and 171-seat A320s. Madeira is located in the north Atlantic Ocean, west and slightly south of Portugal. It a volcanic island famed for its lush vegetation and protected natural spaces, is a favorite destination of ecological tourists and holidaymakers.
Iberia’s franchise partner Iberia Regional Air Nostrum will also fly to Madeira this summer, and the new flights raise the total number of Iberia Group Madrid-Madeira flights to as many as six per week. The total number of seats available during the summer season will reach some 12,000. Iberia Regional Air Nostrum will also offer a 3,500 seats this summer on its three weekly Bilbao-Madeira flights.
Iberia has flown to Portugal since 1939. In addition to Lisbon and Oporto, which it serves throughout the year, as of this summer the airline also flies to Faro in the Algarve and to Funchal in Madeira. Total Spain-Portugal seats offered by the Iberia Group this year will reach 711,000, an 8.8% increase from 2014. Iberia customers in 23 Spanish cities can reach these four destinations in Portugal with easy connections in Madrid.
Madrid-Funchal is one of the 30 new routes launched by Iberia since April, 2014. Others include Havana, Santo Domingo, Montevideo, Cali and Medellin, as well as such European cities as Florence, Hamburg, Edinburgh, Istanbul, and Budapest.
