ITA Airways announces that, for the first time since it began operations, it has begun planning its first Multi-Pilot Licence (MPL) courses, with the goal of training approximately 280 pilots over the next four years, through courses lasting a total of 21 months.
Candidate selection will begin in July, while the first courses will start in October 2026.
To participate in the selection process, candidates must be at least 17 years old, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and have an excellent knowledge of Italian language both spoken and written, and of the English language. A DLR certification will also be required. The program is intended for candidates with no prior flight experience or limited experience.

With the launch of the MPL courses, we aim to build a structured and sustainable pathway for integrating new professionals, planning for staff turnover in the coming years and creating a pool of highly trained young talent”, said Marzio Caneva, Chief Operations & Accountable Manager at ITA Airways.

The MPL is an advanced, internationally recognized aviation licence designed to train pilots to serve as first officers on multi-crew commercial aircraft. The training program combines theoretical instruction, flight training, state-of-the-art simulators, and specific training on airline operating procedures, with a strong focus on cockpit teamwork, safety management, and the skills required for scheduled airline operations.
ITA Airways is currently the only airline in Italy certified to offer MPL courses, and it will manage the selection and recruitment of candidates through specialized teams, drawing on a highly qualified training center. While analysts estimate that the global demand for pilots will grow significantly, Italy’s leading airline is looking to the future with a sustainable plan.
