LATAM Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Flight

LATAM Airlines Orders 10 Boeing 787s for Sustainable Growth

LATAM Airlines Group, the largest passenger and cargo airline group in South America, has announced a significant expansion of its fleet by ordering 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with options for an additional five aircraft.

The order further strengthens LATAM’s position as the region’s largest 787 operator and supports its mission to enhance efficiency and sustainability across its network.

With the new 787-9 Dreamliners, LATAM will expand its current fleet of 37 Dreamliners to 52 by 2030. The airline’s investment in these advanced, fuel-efficient jets enables it to boost capacity on popular routes and add new destinations, including recent nonstop service to Sydney, Australia.

The 787-9 model provides increased passenger and cargo capacity while offering longer range, positioning LATAM to meet growing travel demand across Latin America.

Ramiro Alfonsín, LATAM’s Chief Financial Officer, commented on the acquisition: “The Boeing 787 is a much more efficient aircraft, allowing us to continue growing sustainably while reducing our carbon footprint.” He noted that the airline will receive at least two new Dreamliners annually from 2025 through the end of the decade, supporting LATAM’s long-term expansion goals.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner family stands out for its fuel efficiency, reducing fuel usage and emissions by 25% compared to the older models it replaces. With this advanced technology, LATAM can expand its international network from key hubs in Santiago, Sao Paulo, and Lima while maintaining a focus on sustainable growth.

Since its introduction in 2011, the 787 has facilitated more than 400 new nonstop routes globally and contributed to an estimated 173 billion pounds in avoided carbon emissions. Boeing projects that air travel in Latin America will grow at an annual rate of 5% over the next two decades, with the fleet in the region expected to reach over 3,000 aircraft by 2043.

As LATAM Airlines continues to prioritize sustainability in its growth strategy, this partnership with Boeing positions it at the forefront of South America’s evolving aviation landscape.
