Air traffic operations are resuming gradually across the US following a systemwide computer failure, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Jan. 11, 2023.
The FAA is continuing a thorough review to determine the root cause of the Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system outage.
FAA said that there is no evidence of a cyber attack. According to preliminary work, the reason is because of a damaged database file.
“Normal air traffic operations are resuming gradually across the U.S. following an overnight outage to the Notice to Air Missions system that provides safety info to flight crews. The ground stop has been lifted.” FAA wrote on Twitter.
President Joe Biden was briefed on the FAA’s outage by Buttigieg and Biden directed the Transportation Department to investigate, said a White House spokeswoman.
The FAA provides air traffic services to more than 45,000 flights daily carrying 2.9 million passengers in the National Airspace System.
U.S. airlines said they expect operations to return to normal on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023.
More than 11,300 U.S. flights were delayed or cancelled on Wednesday, according to FlightAware.
