MSC Cruises has released its 2022 Sustainability Report, showcasing significant progress in its commitment to sustainability over the past year.
The report is guided by the materiality assessment carried out in 2019 and revisited in 2022. This crucial process has helped MSC Cruises concentrate its efforts on pressing issues that matter to internal and external stakeholders, as well as areas where the company’s global impact necessitates responsible action.
The Sustainability Action Plan, focused on six priority workstreams, reflects the company’s commitment to align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The plan presents MSC Cruises’ vision for its role, alongside individuals, businesses, and governments, in transitioning to a sustainable world.
The Sustainability Advisory Board for the Cruise Division of MSC Group, chaired by Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago, is charged with ensuring the sustainability strategy remains relevant and effective. The board monitors progress, with guidance and support from the Sustainability Team.
Linden Coppell, MSC Cruises’ Sustainability Vice President, emphasized the importance of open dialogue. He said, “We are in ongoing dialogue with our employees, guests, and key external stakeholders. Through this listening exercise, we can ensure that our current focus areas are appropriate and identify any new areas as they arise.”
The report highlights several areas where MSC Cruises made substantial strides in its Sustainability Action Plan in 2022:
PLANET – MSC Cruises’ commitment to mitigating climate change and protecting ocean biodiversity has driven it to aim for net-zero emissions by 2050. This ambition has involved cooperation with technology companies, shipyards, and fuel providers to push innovation boundaries. A significant step was taken with the launch of MSC Cruises’ first LNG-powered ship in 2022.
PLACE – MSC Cruises strives to support the sustainable development of the exciting destinations its cruises visit. The company’s investments in sustainable cruise terminals have created jobs and bolstered local tourism. It is also actively supporting destination stewardship through collaborations with Cruise Lines International Association and other cruise lines.
PEOPLE – The safety and well-being of passengers and crew are top priorities. Alongside maintaining outstanding healthcare and hygiene standards, MSC Cruises places significant emphasis on supporting the well-being and career development of its crew.
PROCUREMENT – MSC Cruises is determined to procure responsibly. The company’s Sustainable Procurement Committee initiated a comprehensive review of procurement practices in 2022, with the aim of making purchasing decisions with the environment and worker well-being in mind.
