ACI APAC & MID Advocates for Sustainable Growth in Airport Industry at ICAO Conference

The Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID), a leading trade association for airports, has voiced its commitment to the sustainable evolution of the airport industry.

This declaration was made at the ICAO 58th Conference of Director Generals of Civil Aviation for Asia and Pacific Region held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

ACI APAC & MID’s commitment encompasses several key areas:

1. Restoration and Development of Air Connectivity

Before the pandemic, the Asia-Pacific region dominated the global aviation market, accounting for 37% of worldwide air passengers and transporting 47 million tonnes of air cargo. However, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a 38% decline in air connectivity. ACI APAC & MID is urging regulators to implement measures such as incentive programs, partnerships with tourism bodies, and active participation in route development events to restore and enhance air connectivity.

2. Building Sustainable Airport Infrastructure

With an expected surge in air travel in the Asia-Pacific region, anticipating 8.5 billion passengers annually by 2040, sustainable airport development is crucial. ACI APAC & MID is calling for incentivized airport infrastructure, support for energy transition, and access to green finance.

3. Integration of Advanced Air Mobility

ACI APAC & MID emphasized the need for integrating Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) into the air transport system. They advocate for harmonized standards, certifications, and supportive policy frameworks for this emerging mode of transport.

4. Promotion of Gender Equality

Recognizing the aviation industry’s role in global socio-economic growth, ACI APAC & MID is championing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the airport workforce. They are encouraging collaboration with ICAO, airport operators, and states to promote gender equality at airports.

5. Adoption of Innovative Technologies in Airport Security

Addressing the staff shortages impacting airport operations, ACI APAC & MID highlighted the need for technological innovation, especially at security checkpoints. They are urging states to adopt a regulatory framework that facilitates the use of innovative technologies.

Mr. Stefano Baronci, Director General of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, commented on the association’s stance, stating, “ACI APAC & MID remains dedicated to advancing the aviation industry’s sustainability, gender equality, and technological progress. Collaborative efforts with industry stakeholders and regulators are essential. As we navigate the post-COVID-19 era, these pillars will be instrumental in enhancing our industry’s efficiency, sustainability, and contribution to the global economy.”
